O que a Igreja ensina
«Servidores e mensageiros de Deus»
A existência de seres espirituais, não corporais, que a Escritura chama anjos é uma verdade de fé. São criaturas pessoais e imortais, servidores e mensageiros de Deus, que o glorificam sem cessar e velam por nós desde a infância até a morte (CIC 328–336).
Na sua liturgia a Igreja celebra alguns anjos em particular: são Miguel, são Gabriel, são Rafael e os anjos da guarda (CIC 335). Na devoção da Igreja só se dão aos anjos estes três nomes, «cujos nomes estão contidos na Sagrada Escritura»; desaconselha-se o costume de dar outros nomes aos anjos (Diretório sobre a piedade popular, 217). O mesmo Diretório adverte contra a ideia de uma vida reduzida a uma luta impotente entre anjos e demônios: a vitória sobre o mal pede de nós conversão, humildade e oração.

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Pope Leo XIII introduced this prayer throughout the Church at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1994 Saint John Paul II asked the faithful not to forget it, though it is no longer said at the end of Mass, and to pray it for help in the battle against the forces of darkness (Regina Caeli, 24 de abril de 1994). Uma devoção tradicional
O terço de são Miguel
Nove saudações, uma para cada um dos nove coros de anjos, rezadas num terço próprio ou num rosário. A devoção remonta a uma serva de Deus, Antônia d’Astonac, que numa visão recebeu o pedido de são Miguel de ser honrado desse modo. As promessas ligadas a ela vêm de uma revelação privada, que os fiéis são livres para aceitar e que nunca acrescenta nada à fé (CIC 67).

Oh most Noble Prince of the Angelic Hierarchies, valorous warrior of Almighty God, and zealous lover of His glory, terror of the rebellious angels, and love and delight of all the just ones, my beloved Archangel Saint Michael, desiring to be numbered among thy devoted servants, I, today offer and consecrate myself to thee, and place myself, my family, and all I possess under thy most powerful protection.
I entreat thee not to look at how little, I, as thy servant have to offer, being only a wretched sinner, but to gaze, rather, with favorable eye at the heartfelt affection with which this offering is made, and remember that if from this day onward I am under thy patronage, thou must during all my life assist me, and procure for me the pardon of my many grievous offenses, and sins, the grace to love with all my heart my God, my dear Savior Jesus and my Sweet Mother Mary, and obtain for me all the help necessary to arrive to my crown of glory.
Defend me always from my spiritual enemies, particularly in the last moments of my life. Come then oh Glorious Prince and succor me in my last struggle, and with thy powerful weapon cast far from me into the infernal abysses that prevaricator and proud angel that one day thou prostrated in the celestial battle.

O que a Igreja ensina
O combate espiritual
A Escritura e a Igreja falam com sobriedade do Maligno: ele é real, mas não é rival de Deus. A vida comum de fé (a missa, a confissão, a oração e a Escritura) é onde o cristão está protegido.
I
Uma criatura, não um rival
Satanás é um anjo caído e apenas uma criatura. O seu poder não é infinito e ele não pode impedir a construção do Reino de Deus; tudo o que faz é permitido por uma providência que dispõe todas as coisas para o bem.
II
Renunciado no Batismo
Todo cristão já lhe disse não: no Batismo a Igreja reza um exorcismo simples sobre quem vai ser batizado, que depois renuncia a Satanás antes de professar a fé.
III
Livrai-nos do mal
O último pedido do pai-nosso nomeia uma pessoa, não uma abstração: o Maligno, que se opõe ao desígnio de Deus. Cada vez que o rezamos, pedimos para ser libertados dele.

O exorcismo cabe ao bispo
Um exorcismo solene só pode ser feito por um sacerdote com a permissão do bispo, depois de verificar que a pessoa não sofre de uma doença: a doença psíquica é assunto da medicina.
Um exorcista da Igreja
Padre Vincent Lampert
Sacerdote da arquidiocese de Indianápolis, nomeado o seu exorcista pelo arcebispo Daniel Buechlein em 2005, quando, como ele lembra, havia apenas uma dúzia de exorcistas nos Estados Unidos. Hoje é um dos exorcistas mais experientes do país, acompanha os sacerdotes a quem se confia este ministério e escreveu Exorcism: The Battle Against Satan and His Demons (Emmaus Road Publishing, 2020).
A sua mensagem é surpreendentemente simples: o pároco é o «clínico geral», o exorcista um especialista, e o diabo é combatido com a fé que todo católico já tem. Nas suas palavras:
«São os aspectos comuns da nossa fé que nos vão proteger do maligno».

Orações de proteção
Orações que toda a Igreja reza, para todo católico: o sinal da cruz, o pai-nosso, a oração a são Miguel, À vossa proteção (uma das orações mais antigas a Nossa Senhora), Alma de Cristo e Santo Anjo. A água benta e outros sacramentais, abençoados pela Igreja, são sinais da mesma confiança (Catecismo 1667–1673).
Os exorcistas da Igreja contam com o apoio da Associação Internacional de Exorcistas, cofundada em Roma pelo padre Gabriele Amorth (1925-2016), durante muitos anos exorcista da diocese de Roma; a Santa Sé a reconheceu em 2014 (CNS).

Uma gruta no Gargano onde, segundo a tradição, são Miguel apareceu ao bispo são Lourenço Maiorano.
Normandia, França
Abadia do Mont-Saint-Michel
Segundo a lenda contada pela própria abadia, são Miguel apareceu três vezes ao bispo Auberto em 708 e pediu um santuário na ilha então chamada Mont-Tombe.
Monte Pirchiriano, Piemonte, Itália
Sacra di San Michele
Uma abadia dedicada ao arcanjo, construída entre 983 e 987 no cume do monte Pirchiriano, acima do vale de Susa.
