What makes a church a basilica?

The title is given by the Pope to churches of special importance: for their history, their beauty, their relics or the pilgrims who come to them. There are four major or papal basilicas — St Peter’s in the Vatican, and St John Lateran, St Mary Major and St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome — and the minor basilicas around the world. Our map shows those confirmed in the Catholic directory GCatholic. A basilica is a church bound in a special way to the Successor of Peter; its signs are the umbraculum, a half-open canopy of red and gold, and the tintinnabulum, a small bell carried in procession.
