How the Church discerns
Private revelations are never required for faith: it is not their role to complete Christ’s definitive Revelation (Catechism, 67). A bishop studies the events, the messages and their fruits. Under the norms published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2024, the Church as a rule no longer declares a phenomenon supernatural; the most favourable of six possible conclusions is a nihil obstat — the faithful may follow the devotion, without the Church declaring the events supernatural. Approvals given in earlier centuries remain.

Our Lady of the Pillar
Tradition A long tradition of the Church, without a formal judgement
According to an ancient Spanish tradition, recorded in the Roman Breviary for 12 October, the Blessed Virgin appeared to St James the Apostle as he prayed on the banks of the Ebro at Zaragoza and asked him to build a church there. The venerated image of Our Lady stands on a pillar, which gives the shrine its name.

In July 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith told the Bishop of Brescia that it found nothing in her messages contrary to the Church’s teaching on faith and morals, and many positive aspects, leaving him to conclude his discernment.
