Violet

Advent and Lent

The colour of waiting and repentance. Four weeks of Advent prepare for Christ’s coming; forty days of Lent — prayer, fasting and almsgiving — prepare for Easter.

White and gold

Christmas and Easter

The colour of light and joy: the Nativity, the fifty days of Easter, feasts of the Lord and of Mary, and saints who were not martyrs.

Red

The Passion, the Spirit, the martyrs

The blood of Christ and of those who died for him, and the fire of Pentecost. Worn on Palm Sunday, Good Friday and the feasts of apostles and martyrs.

Green

Ordinary Time

The colour of hope and growth. In the thirty-three or thirty-four weeks of Ordinary Time the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ in all its fullness, Sunday by Sunday.

Rose

Gaudete and Laetare

Joy breaking through the waiting — it may be worn on just two Sundays, halfway through Advent and halfway through Lent.

Black

All Souls and funerals

The colour of mourning in hope. It may be used on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and at Masses for the dead; many parishes use violet instead.
