Cathedrals of the world
The mother church of every diocese — where the bishop has his chair, the cathedra, from which the cathedral takes its name. 3,276 Catholic cathedrals and co-cathedrals on one map, each with its diocese and the bishop who leads it today.
Why the cathedral matters
Each diocese has one cathedral: the church where the bishop presides at the great celebrations of the year, ordains priests and blesses the holy oils on Holy Thursday. Some dioceses that were joined together keep a second, a co-cathedral. The anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral is a feast in every church of the diocese. Our list is checked against GCatholic, the directory of the Catholic hierarchy and its churches.
