Marian apparition · Tepeyac, Mexico City, Mexico
Our Lady of Guadalupe
In December 1531 the Virgin appeared four times on the hill of Tepeyac to Juan Diego, an Indigenous convert, and sent him to Bishop Zumárraga to ask for a church. Her image, imprinted on his tilma, hangs in the basilica. Pope Benedict XIV declared Our Lady of Guadalupe patroness of Mexico and fixed her feast on 12 December.
