Close to the friends of God

From the earliest centuries Christians have gathered at the graves of the martyrs and saints to pray, and churches were built over them. The saints are not far away: in the communion of saints we ask for their prayers, and a pilgrimage to their tomb is one of the oldest ways of doing so. Many tombs are in the church that bears the saint’s name; some lie beneath the altar where Mass is celebrated every day.
